Community profiles: introduction
*** Please note: We have now updated our community profiles, for more up-to-date community-based information please visit our New CHP profiles page. ***
Background and aims
In response to positive reaction to a pilot community profile of Paisley (produced by the Public Health Institute of Scotland (PHIS)) and demand for similar profiles in other areas, a set of 66 Community Health and Well-being Profiles covering the whole of Scotland were created. These profiles were published in July 2004.
The principal aims of the profiles were to:
- provide a detailed summary of health and health determinants in communities across Scotland
- make local health information accessible to a wide audience
- draw attention to health inequalities
- highlight trends in key indicators where possible.
Evaluation
The community profiles were independently evaluated in the latter half of 2005. The aims of this evaluation were to assess how the profiles had been used and by whom, their impact on local policy and practice, their strengths and weaknesses, and whether and how such information should be provided in future.
The vast majority of respondents (93%) found the profiles useful or very useful to their work, and there was overwhelming demand (98% of all respondents) for future provision of profiles. Full details of all aspects of the evaluation are available from the final evaluation report(910Kb).
Accessing the community profiles
The Community Health and Well-being Profiles are available on this website as downloadable pdf files (). Please use the left-hand menu to navigate to the community profile(s) you are interested in. Alternatively, click on a health board area on the map below to see the communities that lie within it. From here you can then access the individual community profiles. The community profiles data can also be analysed using our pilot interactive profiler.
