Mortality and morbidity data for CLD presented throughout these sections are based on diagnostic classifications from the WHO International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9 and 10). There is, currently, no universally agreed set of ICD codes for CLD.

For morbidity and mortality analysis, chronic liver disease has been defined using the following ICD codes: ICD-9 571.0-571.6, ICD-10 K70, K73, K74. This approach is consistent with definitions used by the GROS and ONS.

For international comparisons, the WHO definition from the Health for All Database has been used. This is slightly broader in its scope of diagnoses considered 'chronic'. Specifically it includes, in addition to the codes listed above, ICD-9-571.8, .9 and ICD-10 K75-K76.

Please note: If you require the most up-to-date data available, please check the data sources directly as new data may have been published since these data pages were last updated. Although we endeavour to ensure that the data pages are kept up-to-date, there may be a time lag between new data being published and the relevant ScotPHO web pages being updated.
