Obesity: NHS boards

The 2008 Scottish Health Survey was designed to give representative results for every NHS Board in Scotland after 4 years. The results for all NHS Boards from the core survey will be published in mid 2012 (results aggregated for years 2008/09/10). Health Boards with larger samples will be able to analyse their own data before this time. More detailed guidance on the availability of local data from the 2008 survey is available on the SHeS website.

The 2003 Scottish Health Survey gives the prevalence of obesity in those aged 16 and over by local NHS Board areas. The sample size is smaller so the estimates are less accurate than for Scotland as a whole, but give some indication of possible variation in the proportion of those obese between geographical areas.

These figures suggest that for NHS Boards where there is an adequate sample size, Dumfries and Galloway has the largest prevalence of obesity among adults (chart 1).

Additional information on waist measurements by NHS Board area is also available from the 2003 Scottish Health Survey.

NHS Board data on obesity prevalence in primary 1 aged schoolchildren, from those who participate in the Child Health Systems Programme, are also available on the childhood obesity pages of the ISD website

Please note: If you require the most up-to-date data available, please check the data sources directly as new data may have been published since these data pages were last updated. Although we endeavour to ensure that the data pages are kept up-to-date, there may be a time lag between new data being published and the relevant ScotPHO web pages being updated.
