Diabetes: primary care data

Practice Team Information

Statistics on consultations for diabetes in primary care in Scotland are available from the Practice Team Information (PTI) (formerly Continuous Morbidity Recording - CMR) programme. This provides a national prevalence estimate for 2005/06 (adjusted for deprivation) of 3.7% in men and 3.5% in women. Chart 1 shows estimated prevalence of diabetes in Scotland by age group and sex based on CMR/PTI data. Data from the CMR/PTI scheme also show that consultations with nurses make up the majority (73%) of contacts with diabetes patients in primary care in Scotland. More details of the scheme are summarised in the key data sources section.

Quality and Outcomes Framework

The Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) of the new General Medical Services contract, introduced in 2004, includes quality indicators for diabetes. The spreadsheet QOF prevalences for 2006/07 Excel file icon (60Kb) on the ISD website provides estimates of diabetes prevalence.
