Pneumococcal disease

Meningitis, blood poisoning (septicaemia) and pneumonia are forms of Pneumococcal disease. Children and the elderly are most badly affected. Following the introduction of Hib and meningococcal C conjugate vaccines, Pneumococcal infection is now one of the most common causes of invasive bacterial infection in children and from September 2006 is now part of the childhood immunisation programme.
