Mental Health: mental well-being and adults
Currently very few data are collected on the actual state of positive mental health of individuals in the population. However, a programme of work to support the Scottish Executive's National Programme for improving mental health and well-being is seeking to establish a set of national indicators of mental health and well-being for Scotland (the Mental Health Indicators Project). This will include indicators on positive mental health and well-being - it is envisaged that these will cover both the state of individual's positive mental health as well as risk and protective factors for positive mental health and well-being.
For a list of some of the risk and protective factors for mental health refer to the Department of Health document Making it Happen (543kB): A guide to delivering mental health promotion (p31-32)
Some data are currently available on the risk and protective factors are presented below (with source information). This section will be developed as the indicators project progresses.
Positive mental health
The 'Affectometer 2' measurement scale for assessing positive mental health has been used in the 2002 and 2005 Health Education Population Survey. The data are being used in a UK validation of the scale but as yet have not been reported on. Future reports will appear on: Health Soctland research
