Mental Health: further policy context
A Framework for Mental Health Services in Scotland 1997(1010kb)- to assist staff in health, social work and housing agencies to develop a joint approach to the planning, commissioning and provision of integrated mental health services. Also to assist the people who use these services, those who care for them and staff in voluntary and other agencies to play their part as partners and stakeholders.
Mental Health (Care and Treatment)(Scotland) Act 2003 - came into effect in October 2005. It promises to make a major contribution to achieving the ultimate objective of mental health law - to make sure people with mental health problems receive effective care and treatment, in ways that are respectful, represent the least invasive or restrictive option possible, are non-discriminatory and sensitive to the needs of different service users.
Local Government in Scotland Act 2003: Power to Advance Well-Being Guidance - this provided local authorities with power to do anything which it considers likely to promote or improve the well-being of its area and persons within that area. Mental Health Information Strategy for Scotland - the ISD Improving Mental Health Information Programme is developing an information strategy which sets out the steps required to support the development of good quality mental health information in Scotland. The vision of the strategy is that “In order to take good care decisions, and deliver high quality mental health care, good quality information is required. Information must be available at every stage of the process, from assessment to discharge”.
A Scottish Framework for Nursing in Schools (748 kB)- sets out the framework for school nursing teams to promote positive mental health and well-being, both independently and as part of a multi-agency/multi-disciplinary team.
The European Declaration on Mental Health (375 kB) and the World Health Organisation Mental Health Action Plan for Europe
