Asthma: NHS board data

Routine data on asthma in primary and secondary care are available by NHS Board in Scotland.

Table 1 shows the estimated prevalence of asthma in 2007/08 by health board based on Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) figures for Scotland. Note that the data are not age-standardised (as age and sex are not available) and that some of the variation in prevalence may therefore be explained by age. Note too that the prevalence estimates for Shetland are relatively unstable, as they are based on one nGMS practice only (Shetland's practices are predominantly non-GMS).

Note. Further information on these figures and on data from the Quality and Outcomes Framework is available on ISD's Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) web pages.

Table 2 shows "new" admission rates (see note below table) for asthma by NHS Board in financial years 2003/04 to 2007/08. The figures for Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles are based on relatively small numbers of admissions and so should be treated with caution. Among other boards, Borders, Lanarkshire and Tayside had the highest and Grampian, Dumfries & Galloway and Fife the lowest admission rates.

Note. These figures are restricted to "new" admissions for asthma by excluding admissions where there had been an admission in the previous 10 years. Asthma was defined using ICD 10 codes J45 and J46. These figures include both elective and emergency admissions and are not adjusted for age or sex. Further information on these figures is available on the ISD inpatient, day case and outpatient activity web pages.

Please note: If you require the most up-to-date data available, please check the data sources directly as new data may have been published since these data pages were last updated. Although we endeavour to ensure that the data pages are kept up-to-date, there may be a time lag between new data being published and the relevant ScotPHO web pages being updated.
