Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): NHS board data
Chart 1 shows the estimated prevalence of COPD in 2008/09 by health board based on Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) figures for Scotland. A solid line indicates the estimated crude COPD prevalence for the whole of Scotland (1.94%). Note that the data are not age-standardised (as age and sex are not available) and that some of the variation in prevalence may therefore be explained by age.
Chart 2 shows the rates of hospital admission in 2006/07 with COPD as the main diagnosis at the time of discharge, by health board. Data for the three island health boards (Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland) have been omitted as the number of episodes for these health boards were very low. The rates are not standardised for age or sex. The horizontal line indicates the rate of admission for the whole of Scotland (441 per 100,000 population). Comparing chart 1 with chart 2 shows that health boards with estimated COPD prevalence rates which are higher than the national average tended to have COPD admission rates above the national average. The exception to this is Dumfries and Galloway Health Board which, despite having an estimated COPD prevalence higher than the Scottish average, had the lowest rate of admission for COPD in Scotland.
