Injuries: key points
- Injury is the fourth most common cause of death in the European Union, after cardiovascular disease, cancer and respiratory disease
- Self-reported injury rates, as reported by Scottish Health Survey, among men and women aged 16-64 years, have declined significantly from 1995.
- Unintentional injury is one of the more common causes of emergency hospital admissions in children and adults.
- Injury mortality rates are higher in Scotland compared to the rest of the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland.
- The Association of Public Health Observatories in collaboration with a number of key academic institutions have recently established an Injury Observatory for Britain and Ireland (IOBI) to support injury prevention practitioners by making important and relevant information and tools available through one site
