Deprivation: data

Deprivation related tables and graphs appear throughout this site within topic pages e.g. physical activity, deaths, etc.  For further information on how deprivation is related to a specific topic, please go to the data section for that topic. 

The following links provide examples of pages within the site containing figures by deprivation or social class:    physical activity by social class, smoking during pregnancy by deprivation quintile, , mortality (from all causes) by deprivation decile.

Chart 1 shows the percentage of data zones by council that are among the most deprived 15% of data zones in Scotland, as defined by the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD). This proportion varies widely across Scottish Councils.  Four council areas have no data zones defined as among the most deprived 15%.  At the opposite extreme 34% of the most deprived 15% of data zones lie within Glasgow City, although this figure, based on the 2006 version of SIMD, represents a reduction from SIMD 2004 when 38% of such data zones were in Glasgow City.

Chart 2 shows the local share of data zones within each council that are among the 15% most 'health' deprived data zones nationally, as defined by the health domain of the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD). This proportion ranges widely across Scottish Councils.  Orkney and Shetland Island Councils have no data zones among the 15% most 'health' deprived data zones.  At the opposite extreme 39% of data zones in Inverclyde and 49% in Glasgow City, fall within the 15% of most deprived data zones in relation to health.
