Education: key data sources
Census 2001
The General Register Office for Scotland (GROS) maintains the SCROL (Scottish Census Results On-Line) website, which was created to encourage the use of, and widen access to, the results of the 2001 Census in Scotland. In terms of education, this site has a range of tables including population in full-time education, qualifications attained, and students living in an area (broken down for a range of geographical levels). The GROS provides a set of CDs with more detailed data tables and will also undertake ad hoc analyses on request.
Constituency Health and Well-being Profiles
NHS Health Scotland's Constituency Health and Well-being profiles, published in 2004, present a range of health related indicators for Scotland's 73 Scottish Parliamentary Constituencies. Included in the education domain of each profile are five indicators of educational attainment and post-school education.
Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) survey
HBSC is a cross-national research study conducted in collaboration with the WHO Regional Office for Europe.
The study aims to gain new insight into, and increase our understanding of, young people's health and well-being, health behaviours and their social context. HBSC was initiated in 1982 and now has 41 participating countries and regions, including Scotland.
Scottish Household Survey
A Scottish Executive survey, the aims of which include informing policy on transport and social justice. In terms of education, the survey includes questions on qualifications attained and participation in adult education and training.
Scottish Neighbourhood Statistics
The SNS web site provides figures on numbers of school children, school children registered for free school meals, pupils by ethnic background, 'looked after children' and a range of indicators of educational attainment covering school pupils and adults (as numbers and rates per 10,000) broken down by local authority, and which can be downloaded as spreadsheet files.
