Chart 1 shows, by NHS Board area of residence, the percentage of all household spaces which were unoccupied at the time of the 2001 census. There are clearly higher proportions of vacant dwellings in the more rural health board areas such as the Western Isles (where the figure is around twice the national average), Orkney and Shetland. |

When analysed by council area of residence (chart 2), much more variation in rates is apparent. The Western Isles again has the highest proportion of unoccupied household spaces (7.3%), with the lowest figure recorded in East Dunbartonshire (1.4%). In Scotland as a whole the figure in 2001 stood at 3.8%. |
