Chart 1 shows the recenttrend in the 'claimant' unemployment rate for Scotland. As in the rest of the UK there has been a downward trend in the claimant unemployment rate for a number of years. These unemployment estimates use claimant count data for the numerator, which encompasses claimants of Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) or National Insurance Credits. The data are annual average estimates and is subject to rounding. The denominator used is the working-age people (16-59 for females and 16-64 for males). |

Chart 2 shows the variation in claimant unemployment rates at a council level in 2003. The Scottish claimant unemployment rate was 4.5% in 2003, equating to 102,316 unemployed persons. Aberdeenshire Council had the lowest rate (1.8%) while Glasgow City had the highest rate (7.7%). |
