Lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people: useful links

Fair for All LGBT Inclusion Project. The website includes a publicly available LGBT health and wellbeing research database. Those working for a health board in Scotland can also contact the Fair for All project directly (contact details on their website).

UK Department of Health. The Department of Health has carried out some specific pieces of work on sexual orientation.

Equality and Human Rights Commission. This is a useful source of information about rights of individuals and duties of organisations.

Scottish Executive. The Scottish Executive Health and Community Care website contains a link under the heading of 'resources' to an 'equality' search page. There you can search for information on age, disability, gender, race or ethnicity, religion or belief and sexual orientation available from organisations in Scotland.

Equal Minds project. The Equal Minds report PDF Button (392 Kb) brings together a variety of information to describe the mental health issues facing LGB people.  

The San Francisco Public Library. This site includes useful guidance about researching the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender population in the United States.

Stonewall is a professional lobbying group for lesbians, gay men and bisexuals and was founded in response to Section 28 of the Local Government Act 1988, which prohibited local authorities from 'promoting homosexuality'.   The act was repealed in Scotland in 2000 (and in England & Wales in 2003). Their website contains the Stonewall research and policy pages which has a specific heading for health, divided into subsections relating to lesbian, gay and bisexual health care needs, HIV/AIDS and mental health. There is a dedicated website for Stonewall Scotland.

Medical Research Council (MRC) Social and Public Health Sciences Unit (SPHSU). This unit, based at Glasgow University, includes the MRC SPHSU sexual and reproductive health programme. A full list of publications can be obtained from their website.

National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles: this site provides further information on the design and the questionnaire.

Local Scottish support groups. This site provides information on local support groups (scroll to the foot of the page to see the relevant links).

Both the TUC and UNISON web sites have useful resources to support LGB people in the NHS workforce.
