PHINS Seminar - Friday 5th September 2008
Around 300 delegates attended this year's PHINS (Public Health Information Network for Scotland) seminar, which took place on Friday 5th September 2008 in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. You can view the morning's programme here: PHINS 2008 seminar programme (30Kb).
Below are links to some of the talks presented at the seminar. Please note that most of the links are to PowerPoint presentations, some of which may take several minutes to download. Note that as some of the research that was presented is still unpublished, not all the presentations are available to download.
'General update' section
David Walsh (Glasgow Centre for Population Health) provided a general update on Health & well-being related information projects (1.1Mb) in Scotland.
'New research' section
Colin Fischbacher (ISD Scotland) and Bruce Whyte (Glasgow Centre for Population Health) gave a joint presentation on Insights from the new 2008 community health & well-being profiles (4.6Mb)
Sonnda Catto (NHS Health Scotland) presented work on survey measurements of alcohol consumption, entitled How much are people in Scotland really drinking? (3.7Mb). Note also that the report on which the presentation was based can be accessed from the relevant publication page of the scotPHO website.
Jamie Reid (now with ISD Scotland) presented an overview of his PhD research. The presentation - 'Exploring the existence of a "Glasgow Effect"' - is not yet available to download. However, if you wish further information, you can email Jamie here.
'New inequalities' section
Rich Mitchell (University of Glasgow) gave a presentation on 'Geography and Scotland's new public health'. This is unpublished work, and thus is not available to download. However, contact details for the presenter are available from the relevant page of the Glasgow University website.
Ian Grant (ISD Scotland) discussed 'The epidemiology of liver disease in Scotland'. This is also unpublished work and is thus unavailable. However, further details can be obtained from emailing Ian.
Finally, Will Linden of the Strathclyde Police Violence Reduction Unit, gave a presentation on 'Violent crime as a public health issue in Scotland'. For further details of the Unit's work, see the Unit's website, or you can email Will directly.
