Deaths: NHS boards

Chart 1 shows the age-sex standardised all-cause mortality rates in 2022, broken down by NHS board and expressed per 100,000 people. Even at this relatively large geography, considerable variation in rates is evident across Scotland. The highest figures were in the west of the country (Ayrshire & Arran, Lanarkshire, and Greater Glasgow & Clyde), and the lowest were in Shetland.

Deaths are allocated to area of residence. For non-residents dying in Scotland, deaths are allocated to place of death. Non-residents account for less than 1% of deaths in Scotland.
