Religion, spirituality and belief: Geographic area

Data and breakdowns of religion by geographic region are available from Scotland’s Census Data Explorer

In 2011:

  • Over a quarter of people in all local authorities except Glasgow City and City of Edinburgh reported Church of Scotland as their religion. The highest proportion of people reporting Church of Scotland as their religion were in South Ayrshire, Dumfries and Galloway, and Eilean Siar.
  • The highest proportion of people reporting Roman Catholic as their religion was in Inverclyde, while the highest proportion of people reporting Other Christian was in Eilean Siar.
  • The highest proportion of people reporting being Muslim was in Glasgow City (5.4% of people in that local authority).
  • Almost half of people living in Aberdeen City reporting having no religion. The local authority with the lowest proportion of people reporting having no religion was Eilean Siar.
