Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): deprivation data

Deprivation and Secondary Care

Chart 1 for males and Chart 2 for females show the strong relationship between COPD and deprivation. The rate of hospital admissions with a diagnosis of COPD is highest for people living in the most deprived areas of Scotland and lowest for those in the least deprived areas. The relationship between deprivation and COPD admissions is weakest in males aged 85+, with males residing in quintiles 1, 2 and 3 having comparable rates of admission. This distribution mirrors the distribution for smoking prevalence, with rates highest in the most deprived quintiles.

Please note that while 2023 admissions data have been used in the charts below, 2022 mid-year population estimates have been used to estimate age-sex standardised rates.

More data on COPD admissions and smoking behaviours split by deprivation, including health-board and council-level splits, can be found in the Tobacco Use section of the ScotPHO website and the ScotPHO profiles tool.

Please note: If you require the most up-to-date data available, please check the data sources directly as new data may have been published since these data pages were last updated. Although we endeavour to ensure that the data pages are kept up-to-date, there may be a time lag between new data being published and the relevant ScotPHO web pages being updated.
