Injuries: secondary care

The Public Health Scotland publication Unintentional Injuries reports on hospital admissions related to unintentional injuries and assaults in Scotland, with one annual publication on all unintentional injuries and another on falls specifically.

Key points:

  • In 2021/22, unintentional injuries accounted for approximately 1 in 9 hospital admissions in adults and 1 in 7 admissions in children.
  • There were over 57,000 emergency admissions to hospitals in Scotland for unintentional injuries in 2021/22, accounting for 10% of all emergency admissions.
  • Almost half of these admissions in 2021/22 were in those aged 65 and over, the majority of which were due to falls. The rate of falls in this age group has been on the rise, increasing from 20.7 per 1,000 in 2012/13 to 22.5 per 1,000 in 2021/22.
